English is the most common language in the world with 1.5 billion speakers worldwide. In many countries, English is the official language. All parents want their children to excel in speaking English for their future professional success. Moreover, most of the videos for children on the popular video-sharing platform, Youtube, are in English. Hence, children start understanding and speaking English from a very young age.

However, there is a side-effect of this overpowering influence of the English language for children whose mother tongue is not English. They have started regressing in learning their mother tongue. Schools have the propensity to focus on English. Parents also strive to teach English to their children. In addition, there is not much entertainment material available in other languages on Youtube or television.

So, how should we go about teaching the native language to a child? I believe that one parent should only speak that language to the child. We have to strike a balance. English is important but native languages are also important as they are an integral element of a country’s heritage. We shouldn’t let beautiful languages like Urdu, Hindi, etc. dwindle.
I have started making flashcards for languages like Hindi, Urdu, and Arabic. The first in the series are these colors flashcards. Cut ✂️ chart paper or recycled cardboard in A4 size. Print 🖨️ the colors flashcards on A4 size papers. Paste the printed copy on the cut chart paper and then, cut each individual flashcard around the dotted line. You will have store-bought quality flashcards 😊! You can also make them waterproof by covering them with transparent tape on both sides. I have also made worksheets for testing the learning of children.
