Materials For Kids

Before children start studying the subject of Chemistry revolving around elements with their atoms and compound with their molecules, they have to learn that everything is made of a material. A chair is made of wood, a house is made of bricks and a milk bottle is made of glass. They also have to be taught that all materials have one or more properties or super powers. Spiderman can shoot webs, Superman can fly, and a material called plastic is waterproof. It has the superpower that it isn’t harmed by water 😁

It was raining  🌧️ one day and while using an umbrella ☂️, my child was inquisitive that why is the umbrella waterproof as it seemed to be made of cloth. So, I started explaining to him about nylon and made-made materials, and then, we had an entertaining discussion on materials and their properties; this gave me the idea of making material worksheets. Now, this is not just a Science topic. This is also a very nice way of building vocabulary. I hope you like this effort of mine to teach grade 1-3 children about materials. I have tried to make them easy to understand but colorful and fun. They can be used by younger children too.

Another important thing that I firmly believe in is that these worksheets might be fun but learning should not be just about worksheets. Add sensory exercises such as the following to your learning 😊

Ask your children to observe their surroundings and collect :

  • 2 objects made of soft materials
  • 2 objects made of hard materials
  • 2 objects made of transparent materials
  • 2 objects made of waterproof materials

Make them observe and touch. Make the learning experience fun this way. Don’t just rely on worksheets.

I hope you have an enjoyable experience learning about materials. Have a look at what is inside the beautiful PDF:
