Hello friends,
Today is a very big day for all the children who have been using my worksheets to practice their phonics. I am finally finished with making my group 4. Yes, it took longer than expected. My son is in grade 9 and he was having trouble with some new maths concepts so I got busy with that along with my new online coding classes.
Group 4 in Jolly Phonics is the first group with long vowel sounds. So, what are long vowel sounds? Long vowel sounds are the sounds that say the name of the vowel. For example, both “ai” and “ay” say the name of the letter “a“. Remember that in group 1 we learned that “a“ has the /a/ sound that comes from our mouth when we say “ant” 🐜 and “apple” 🍎. This was the short vowel sound of “a“. Now, children are being taught that “a“ in combination with some other letter will make a long sound that is exactly like the name of the letter “a“. Try saying words like paid, gain, and say. You will hear yourself saying the name of the letter “a“. In the beginning, Jolly Phonics just focuses on one spelling of the long vowel sounds such as “ai”. Alternate spelling such as ay and a_e are taught later.
The following image shows the seven groups of Jolly Phonics along with an extra group (alternate spellings) taught by my Phonics app on Google Play Store.
Phonics Fun is my android app available for free on Google Play Store. The entire version is completely free. It has all 42 sounds of jolly phonics along with cute pictures. The children can practice their learning by playing 16 levels of matching games! So, it is definitely a fun way of practicing phonics.
So, have a further peek inside my group 4 worksheets. They follow the same pattern as my previous jolly phonics worksheets. Group 4 covers the sounds: ai, j, oa, ie, ee, or. There are matching, coloring, writing, and blending activities.
I have written an article to help parents who want to know more about jolly phonics and want their children to become early readers. Have a look at this
detailed article. It explains my journey as a parent to help my child become an early reader using the wonderful power of jolly phonics along with some really cool magic key books by Oxford.
Although my phonics fun app is a fantastic and free way of learning and practicing phonics, some children still prefer paper flashcards that they can touch. So, I have also published phonics flashcards that can be easily printed, cut, and used. Have a look at them here.
Use this tutorial to turn my phonics flashcards printables into quite sturdy and waterproof store-bought quality flashcards without even using lamination:

I hope you like this effort. All my PDFs are high-quality and you just need to print and use them. Please share about my work with friends and family 😊
