They tell us what action is taking place. For example, I swim. There is nothing complicated as such but some rules have to be followed when using verbs; the form of verbs changes depending on when the action is taking place. Look at the following two sentences:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #45818e; font-family: helvetica; font-size: large;\">\u00a01. I swim.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #0e101a;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #e69138;\">2. The first sentence means that I do the action (swimming) often. <\/span><span style=\"color: #45818e;\"><b>This sentence is in the Present Simple form of tense.<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #0e101a;\"> The second sentence means that I did some swimming and I did it yesterday. It has a different meaning than the first sentence. It means that the action i.e. swimming was performed in the past and it is finished now. <\/span><span style=\"color: #e69138;\"><b>This sentence uses the Past Simple form of tense.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #e69138;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/obsidiansofteducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/8_3.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #0e101a; font-family: helvetica; text-align: left;\">There are basically only three tenses in the English Language: the present, the past, and the future. The <\/span><span style=\"color: #45818e; font-family: helvetica; text-align: left;\"><b>present tense<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #0e101a; font-family: helvetica; text-align: left;\"> is used to tell about an action that is happening now or it is used for an action that is always true. The <\/span><span style=\"color: #38761d; font-family: helvetica; text-align: left;\"><b>past tense<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #0e101a; font-family: helvetica; text-align: left;\"> is used for an action that has already happened before this point in time. The <\/span><span style=\"color: #674ea7; font-family: helvetica; text-align: left;\"><b>future tense<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #0e101a; font-family: helvetica; text-align: left;\"> is used for an action that has to take place.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0e101a; font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0e101a; font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">This is a very broad division of tenses. Each of these tenses (present, past, and future) is further divided into four sub-tenses: Simple, Continuous, Perfect, and Perfect Continuous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0e101a; font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0e101a; font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">In the beginning, children are only taught the Simple version of the three basic tenses:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0e101a; font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0e101a; font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">1. Present Simple Tense<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0e101a; font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">2. Past Simple Tense<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0e101a; font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">3. Future Simple Tense<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0e101a; font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #0e101a;\">So, this is <\/span><b><span style=\"color: #e69138;\">part 1<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color: #0e101a;\"> of my plan to teach tenses to children. I have made these worksheets to focus on only the simple tenses. I will go on to the other tenses in other parts. Let&#8217;s look at some examples of the usage in the picture below:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0e101a; font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background-attachment: initial; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; color: #0e101a; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/obsidiansofteducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Screenshot2021-06-24at11.17.53AM.png\" width=\"640\" height=\"216\" border=\"0\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #0e101a;\">As you can see the root verb in the examples above is <\/span><span style=\"color: #cc0000;\"><b>swim.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">When it is being used in <b>past<\/b> form, it changes its form and becomes <b><span style=\"color: #45818e;\">swam<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">In its <b>future simple<\/b> form, it stays the same\u00a0but <b><span style=\"color: #38761d;\">will<\/span><\/b><b style=\"color: #6aa84f;\"> <\/b>is added before it to show that the action will happen in the future.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">Now, this requires two kinds of practice. First, you have to remember the changes required to make a verb turn into its future simple form. And another important thing is the learning of the past form of a verb. Children have to learn that the past form of <b><span style=\"color: #cc0000;\">swim<\/span><\/b> is <b style=\"color: #674ea7;\">swam.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">I know that there is another form of verb called the past participle but I believe that that form is too advanced for beginners to English especially children who are learning English as a secondary language. So, let&#8217;s start with some easy, common verbs and their past forms and delay the learning of past participle form for a later time.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">The learning of the past form of verbs requires some time and practice. Some verbs like cook just require the addition of &#8220;ed&#8221; at the end of it to make it into a past form.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">1. I cook lasagne.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">2. I cooked lasagne.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">3. I will cook lasagne.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: large; text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; text-align: left;\">Isn&#8217;t this example simple? Then, we have irregular verbs like swim where the past tense is not as simple as adding &#8220;ed&#8221; at the end of it. The past form of swim is swam. The past form of run is ran. The past form of sleep is slept. Children in the beginning struggle with this. You may hear them saying runned and sleeped and this has to be gently corrected while they are trying to speak.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; font-size: large;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/obsidiansofteducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/8_4.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; text-align: left;\">If English is their first language, they will learn it faster but for other children whose first language is not English, this may be difficult but not impossible. I am providing a list of common verbs and their past forms in the ebook too. I have tried to keep it simple and colorful.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: helvetica; text-align: left;\">I hope you like my effort. This is the way I taught English to my children. The second thing is lots of reading.
